Fleck 5600SXT Troubleshooting

Pentair publishes the 5600SXT documentation as a service manual, addressed to a dealer — not as an owner’s manual. Most of the corrections in its troubleshooting table are things like “replace the timer”, “remove the piston and clean the control” and “replace seals, spacers and the piston assembly”. Independent guides reprint those rows as homeowner fixes. This page keeps the manufacturer’s rows and sorts every one of them by what it actually asks you to do.

First: confirm it is an SXT

The mechanical Fleck 5600 and the digital 5600SXT are different controls. Nothing on this page applies to a 5600 with a mechanical timer and no display. Look at the control itself, not the tank: the SXT has a backlit digital display and Up, Down and Extra Cycle buttons.

Do not go by the brand on the cabinet either. Pentair sells this valve to system builders, so a finished softener may carry any number of names while running a 5600SXT inside — and we found no Pentair list of which ones do, so we do not publish one.

Error codes, exactly as Pentair lists them

These appear on the In Service display. The right-hand column is the manual’s own recovery path, which matters: only one of the five is resolved by changing a setting.

The manual has you unplug the unit and examine the powerhead — cam switches, motor, drive train, and whether the piston travels freely. 1 Cycle Step Error The control experienced an unexpected cycle input. Examine the powerhead, then verify in Master Programming that the valve type and system type match the unit itself, then step through a manual regeneration. Contact technical support if it recurs. Service work
2 Regen Failure The system has not regenerated for more than 99 days — or seven days if the Control Type is set to Day-of-Week. Run a manual regeneration to clear it. Then confirm the unit is measuring flow, and check in Master Programming that the capacity, day override and meter type are right, and that a Day-of-Week system has at least one day ON. Resolved through programming
3 Memory Error Control board memory failure. The manual calls for a Master Reset and a full reconfiguration through Master Programming, then a manual regeneration. Contact technical support if it recurs. Service work
UD Upper Drive Sync A power failure during a programming change. The manual states the valve will recover automatically. Recovers on its own

Code 2 is the one worth reading twice. It means the system has not regenerated for more than 99 days — or seven days on a Day-of-Week control. The manual’s answer is a manual regeneration to clear it, then a check that the unit is measuring flow, then a check of capacity, day override and meter type in Master Programming. That is a settings problem, and the settings decoder covers those parameters.

The troubleshooting table, sorted by what it asks of you

The symptoms and causes below are Pentair’s. The classification in the middle column is ours, and it is the reason this page exists: a service manual does not distinguish between closing a bypass valve and dismantling a valve body, because it is written for someone qualified to do both.

It never regenerates Owner check Electrical service interrupted, a defective timer, or a power failure. Two of the three are owner-checkable: assure permanent electrical service by checking the fuse, plug, pull chain or switch, and reset the time of day after a power failure. "Replace timer" is not.
Hard water at the taps Owner check Bypass valve open, no salt in the brine tank, plugged injector screen, insufficient water into the brine tank, hot water tank hardness, a leak at the distributor tube, or an internal valve leak. Start with the first two — close the bypass, and add salt keeping the level above the water. The rest of that list is inside the valve.
It uses too much salt On-screen / programming An improper salt setting, or excessive water in the brine tank. The manual sends you to check salt usage and the salt setting. On this control that means the brine fill time, BF — see the settings decoder.
Loss of water pressure Service work Iron buildup in the line or in the conditioner, or the control inlet plugged by material loosened during recent plumbing work. The manual’s corrections include removing the piston and cleaning the control.
Resin leaving through the drain line Service work Air in the water system, or an improperly sized drain line flow control. Checking for a dry well condition and confirming the drain rate are both outside ordinary homeowner work.
Iron in the softened water On-screen / programming A fouled mineral bed. The manual asks you to check backwash, brine draw and brine tank fill, increase regeneration frequency and increase backwash time — all programming changes, on parameters the decoder explains.
Excessive water in the brine tank Service work Plugged drain line flow control, plugged injector system, timer not cycling, or foreign material in the brine valve or brine line flow control. Every correction listed for this row involves cleaning or replacing a component.
It fails to draw brine Owner check Plugged drain line flow control or injector, plugged injector screen, line pressure too low, an internal control leak, or a service adapter that did not cycle. One row here is genuinely checkable without tools: the manual says to increase line pressure to 20 psi. The rest is service work.
The control cycles continuously Service work A misadjusted, broken or shorted switch. The correction is replacing the switch, the timer or the complete power head.
Water runs to drain continuously On-screen / programming The valve is not programming correctly, foreign material in the control, or an internal control leak. The manual’s first correction is to check the timer program and the positioning of the control — a programming check before any disassembly. If that is right, the remaining corrections are service work.

The corrections you can actually make

Across the whole table, these are the corrections that need no disassembly and no depressurising. They are quoted from the manual’s own correction column:

  • Assure permanent electrical service — check the fuse, plug, pull chain or switch.
  • Reset the time of day after a power failure.
  • Close an open bypass valve.
  • Add salt, and maintain the salt level above the water level.
  • Increase line pressure to 20 psi.

Everything else in that table is a component being cleaned, replaced or removed. That is not a judgement about your competence — it is what the corrections say.

Upflow or downflow: what actually differs

This is worth stating clearly, because it is easy to assume otherwise. We compared the two Pentair manuals section by section. Their troubleshooting tables and error-code tables are the same — identical but for the configuration name in the footer. So there is no upflow-versus-downflow branch in the tables above, because there is nothing to branch on.

The downflow double-backwash diagram lists five valve positions including a second backwash; the upflow lists four. We are not publishing a step-by-step position order from those diagrams, because they are two-column figures and a text extraction of them is not something we would stake a procedure on.
