Why Is My Water Softener Not Using Salt?

A salt level that looks unchanged does not prove the softener is broken. Confirm that regenerations are occurring and that the level has not moved across more than one cycle. Then check for a salt bridge, brine draw, restricted flow, and model-specific faults in that order.

What do you observe?

Is the salt really not moving?

This is worth establishing before anything else, because the observation is easy to get wrong. A demand-initiated control regenerates only when metered water use calls for it, which in a small household can be many days apart. Salt use per cycle can also be modest — Whirlpool's WHES30 specification lists rated capacities at salt doses from 2.4 lb up to 13.1 lb, and the control selects the dose it needs. A couple of pounds disappearing from a full tank is not visible.

Mark the level, write down the date, and compare after several regenerations rather than after a few days. If the level has genuinely not moved across multiple documented cycles, continue.

The documented order of checks

Whirlpool publishes a specific sequence for little or no salt use, and it deliberately starts further upstream than most people expect.

  1. Confirm the unit is metering water. Its reasoning is direct: the unit uses metered water use to decide when to recharge, so a unit that is not metering is not recharging, and a unit that is not recharging has no reason to use salt. On Whirlpool and Kenmore controls the documented test is to hold Program/Select until 000 appears, run a hot faucet, and watch whether the numbers climb.

  2. Check for a salt bridge or block. Only once you know cycles are happening does an untouched salt level point at the tank itself.

  3. Check the fill cycle. If there is no bridge, Whirlpool's conclusion is that the softener is not filling the tank with water during the recharge — so no brine can be made regardless of how much salt is present.

Checking for a salt bridge

A salt bridge is a hard crust that forms across the tank, leaving an empty space between the water below and the salt above. Whirlpool explains the consequence precisely: with a bridge in place, salt does not dissolve into the water to make brine, so the resin bed is not recharged and hard water results. It attributes bridges to high humidity or the wrong kind of salt. WaterBoss attributes them to mixing different types of salt or to the environment the unit sits in.

A full tank hides a bridge, because loose salt can sit on top of it. Whirlpool and GE describe materially the same physical test, which is why we present it as a general check:

  1. Measure from the floor to the rim of the softener and mark that distance on a broom handle.
  2. Push the handle straight down into the salt.
  3. If it meets something hard before the mark reaches the top — and it is not the floor or the side of the tank — you most likely have a bridge.
  4. Push gently into it in several places to break it up.

No bridge, and it is metering: what is left

If the unit is cycling and there is no bridge, brine is not being drawn out of the tank, or water is not going into it. Whirlpool's owner's manual lists the causes for a tank that stays full of water with flow to the drain, and several of the same components explain a tank whose salt is untouched:

Nozzle and venturi (injector) Creates the suction that draws brine from the tank into the resin during the brine stage. Whirlpool lists a dirty, plugged or damaged assembly first. GE gives the inspection instruction: with water pressure to the system off, take the nozzle assembly apart, inspect, clean and replace as needed — any particle, scratch or nick in the passages can prevent operation, and the holes in the gasket must be centred over the holes in the housing.
Drain line Carries brine and rinse water away, and must be unrestricted for the venturi to work. GE states that a pinched, plugged, elevated or otherwise restricted drain hose may prevent proper operation of the nozzle and venturi and reduce or prevent brine draw. Whirlpool separately requires the hose to have no kinks, sharp bends or flow blockage.
Brine float assembly Limits how high the water level in the brine tank can rise. Whirlpool lists a dirty or broken brine valve float, with cleaning or replacement as the correction.
System water pressure Drives the venturi. Whirlpool notes low pressure may disrupt brine draw during recharge, gives a minimum of 20 psi, and advises a pressure reducing valve fitted by a licensed plumber if daytime pressure exceeds 100 psi.
Drain lines joined by a tee The valve drain and the tank overflow are meant to be separate runs. Whirlpool lists them tee'd together as a documented fault, with the correction being to disconnect the tee and run separate lines.
Bypass position Determines whether water reaches the unit at all. Whirlpool lists bypass valves left in the bypass position as one of only two causes of "no soft water and salt level not dropping" — the other being a bridged tank.

What this result does not prove

  • Breaking a bridge does not prove the bridge was the only fault. Re-check the level across the next few cycles.
  • Salt beginning to move again does not prove the water is soft. Test at the tap after a completed regeneration — Whirlpool and Kenmore read 0 to 3 gpg, or 0 to 50 ppm, as soft.
  • A clean-looking injector does not rule out a restriction you cannot see inside the drain line.
  • Nothing here indicates anything about drinking water safety.
