First determine whether the softener cannot regenerate at all or simply does not start
automatically. A successful manual regeneration points toward time, demand, meter, or
scheduling issues; a cycle that will not start or complete needs a different set of checks.

First, establish whether it is regenerating at all
A regeneration is not silent or instantaneous, so there is something to observe. Whirlpool
describes the stages and their approximate durations: Fill puts water into
the brine tank for around 5 to 15 minutes and can raise the level from a few inches to a few
feet; Brine draw and brine rinse pulls that brine through the resin and takes
around two hours, flowing slowly to the drain; Backwash runs fresh water
upward through the resin for around 6 to 12 minutes; Rinse settles the bed
again for 2 to 3 minutes. The average total is 2 to 2.5 hours.
That matters for two reasons. A cycle you thought had stalled may simply be in the long brine
stage. And a brine tank that looks alarmingly full may have been observed during Fill, which
is normal.

No power to the control
Blank display, or a display that does not respond.
Check the cord and outlet. GE notes that if a wall switch controls the outlet it must
stay on at all times.
Clock lost after a power cut
The time display is flashing rather than steady.
Reset the time. Whirlpool lists an incorrect time as a documented cause of
intermittently hard water, because a scheduled cycle then runs at the wrong hour.
The unit is not metering water
On a Whirlpool or Kenmore control, holding Program/Select shows 000 and
the numbers do not climb while a faucet runs.
Whirlpool states that a unit which is not metering will not recharge automatically. See
the metering check below.
Hardness set too low
The programmed value is below a current test of the untreated supply.
A single bypass handle pushed in, or a three-valve bypass set to bypass.
Return it to service. Water is not passing through the meter, so demand is never
registered.
Motor or valve fault
No motor movement when a regeneration is started, or a motor that stalls or clicks.
Whirlpool attributes this to the wiring harness, the position switch, a valve creating
high torque, or the motor. All are service repairs.
It regenerates on command, but never on its own
This is the more common half, and it is usually about demand rather than hardware. Whirlpool
publishes an explicit order for it, and following that order avoids replacing parts that are
working.
Check the hardness programming. The control decides when to regenerate from
the hardness number and metered use. Too low a number means it believes each gallon carries
less hardness than it does, so it waits too long.
Confirm the unit is metering. On Whirlpool and Kenmore controls the
documented test is to hold the Program/Select button until 000 appears, open a
faucet, and watch whether the numbers climb. If they climb, the meter works and the unit is
recharging on demand. If they do not, Whirlpool routes you to its Failure to Meter Water
article — the unit has not been tracking use, so it has not been recharging.
Run a regeneration and test afterwards. Watch the salt drop over the
two-hour cycle, then test cold taps with a hardness strip. Whirlpool and Kenmore both read 0
to 3 gpg, or 0 to 50 ppm, as soft.
A cycle that will not start, or will not finish
If the control is powered, the clock is steady and a manual regeneration produces no motor
movement at all, the problem sits between the control and the valve. Whirlpool's own error
code documentation attributes a motor that does not run to four things: a fault in the wiring
harness or the connections to the position switch, a fault in the switch, a valve fault
creating high torque on the motor, or an inoperative motor. For a motor that stalls or clicks,
it lists a motor malfunction or an internal valve fault, and gives the corrections as
replacing the rotor and seal, or the motor and switch.
Every one of those is a parts replacement rather than an adjustment, and telling them apart
needs the diagnostic procedure in your own service documentation.
What this result does not prove
A successful manual regeneration does not prove the resin still has capacity. It proves the
valve and control can complete a cycle.
A working meter does not prove the hardness number is right. A correctly metering unit with a
wrong hardness value still regenerates at the wrong interval.
Salt dropping does not prove the water is soft. Whirlpool and Kenmore both end their checks
with a test strip for exactly this reason.
Nothing on this page says anything about whether your water is safe to drink. Softening is
not disinfection or contaminant removal.
