Whirlpool routes its own support by the first seven digits of the serial number, printed on the inside rim of the tank under the salt lid hinges. That is the number to find before following anything below.
There is a second identifier worth checking, because getting it wrong causes a documented
fault of its own. Whirlpool's controls report a model code in the diagnostics display — L30P for a WHES30 and L33P for a WHES33. Whirlpool states that an
incorrect model code makes the softener operate on incorrect configuration data, and lists it
among the causes of water that is hard only some of the time.
Every row cites a Whirlpool document. Where the owner's manual for the WHES30 and WHES33 covers the symptom, the page is given; where only the support article covers it, the manual column is empty rather than guessed.

Hold the Program/Select button until 000 appears, open a hot faucet, and watch
whether the numbers climb. If they climb the flow meter works and the unit is recharging on
demand. If they do not, the unit has not been tracking water use, so it has not been
recharging — and nothing about salt, brine or resin can be judged until that is fixed.
That button sequence is documented for Whirlpool and Kenmore controls. Do not apply it to another brand.
If you are trying to work out whether the unit is simply too small, the specification table matters more than the model name. The WHES30 is rated at 12,500 grains at a 2.4 lb salt dose, 26,600 grains at 7.8 lb, and 31,700 grains at 13.1 lb. One softener, three published capacities, depending on how much salt it is told to use.
Whirlpool also lists supply limits: a maximum hardness of 95 gpg and maximum clear water iron of 8 ppm for the WHES30, and 105 gpg and 9 ppm for the WHES33. Above a model's iron rating the answer is separate iron treatment ahead of the softener, not a different setting. The size calculator works out the load your household actually puts on it.
Whirlpool states it is normal to have between 0 and 4 inches of water in the bottom of the salt tank, and that the level rises and falls with the cycle — the Fill stage alone can raise it from a few inches to a few feet. Water standing above the salt at rest is the symptom worth acting on.
Whirlpool's method is to measure from the floor to the rim of the softener, mark that distance on a broom handle, push it straight down into the salt, and treat anything hard felt before the mark reaches the top as a probable bridge.
